Smart Local Search & Mobile Users
In PubCon session “Local Search & Mobile Optimization, panelists discussed how search queries are changing and user search behavior differs from a PC to mobile user. The “get it now” attitude is growing and with that, mobile is booming.
Eric Bramlett stated that the public is now conducting “smarter” searches, local searches. It’s becoming increasingly important to secure hyperlocal listings such as Foursquare, Gowalla, and Facebook Places to help verify your business location. Google Place search is closely tied to this as well.
Below are a few important factors for local ranking:

Website on Page Factors:
- Include City, State in title tag
- Include physical address in pages
- Customize local keywords by page for multiple locations
Off Page Factors:
- Local citations
- Universal Business Listings
Now, there are differences in search between a PC and mobile user. Desktops are typically used for topics that need to be researched deeply. Mobile is used more for quick “get it now” type of information. In 2010, less “research” occurred and mobile search increased. How can you “win” on mobile? You must have at least 2 of the following: Location, Branding, and/or Trust. This translates to being the closest business, having recognition, and online reviews. If you’re set up with all three elements, you are sure to win in the mobile space.
