Most content does not fail because it is bad. It fails because it adds nothing new. A location page with a new city name swapped in. A guide that repeats what 20 competitors already said. The library grows; knowledge about your business does not.
AI search punishes this, and the reason is simple.
AI engines rarely answer a question with one search. Google confirms that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out, splitting one question into many related searches. Ask for the best Seattle hotel for a family spring break, and the engine looks separately for family rooms, nearby attractions, kid-friendly dining and airport access.
Every one of those searches costs compute, so AI engines are selective. Before content is used, it must pass a test of information gain: Does this source add anything new? Pages that repeat what others say get filtered out. Publishing more pages does not help either. Google warns that creating pages for every query variation can violate its scaled content abuse policy.
What gets through is additive content: information that is new, fresh, and specific to a query. Think events, FAQs, parking details, room configurations and local tips.
For local businesses, this is good news. Your best additive content already lives in your real-world context. A location’s ties to the airport, the convention center or the neighborhood are exactly what fan-out queries ask about, and competitors cannot copy them.
As we described in Local 5.0: The next evolution of local SEO, AI engines do not assume a location is a good fit. They are looking for proof.
Step 1: Start with customer questions. Mine reviews, site search, call logs and AI prompts. Look for what customers keep asking and cannot easily find. That list is your content plan.
Step 2: Map the fan-out. Break each question into the smaller questions AI engines are likely to explore. A family-trip query becomes rooms, attractions, dining and transport. Each one is a chance to be cited.
Step 3: Audit for gaps. Check your website, Google Business Profile, and listings against those sub-questions. Flag answers that are missing, generic, or inconsistent. Templated location pages usually fail here. As we covered in How AI is reshaping local search and what enterprises must do now, thin or inconsistent location data gets passed over.
Step 4: Add what you know. Fill the gaps with verified, location-specific detail. Publish events, FAQs, accessibility information, parking and local expertise. Change the information, not just the city name.
Step 5: Keep it fresh. What is new today is old next month. Events are one of the fastest ways to give AI engines a timely reason to recommend you. One Milestone hospitality client saw a 119% lift in event page views and 350% more clicks to the booking engine within 90 days of listing events.
Step 6: Structure, distribute, and measure. Use schema and consistent entity data so AI engines can extract facts with confidence. Strong entity authority removes ambiguity, and a Context Memory Graph connects location data with reviews and intent. Publish the same verified facts across every touchpoint. Then track AI visibility, share of voice and accuracy per location, and feed what you learn back into Step 1.
Being found is not the same as being chosen
Getting AI engines to find your content is only the start. To recommend you, they need a reason. Additive content gives them one.
In the AI decision layer, AI engines pick a short list of brands to recommend. The brands with the most useful, unique information make the list.
Doing this across hundreds of locations takes the right tools. Milestone’s latest Content Studio releases helps teams add knowledge without losing accuracy.
A competitor can copy your headline, template, and keyword strategy. They cannot copy what you uniquely know. Stop asking how much content you can create. Ask how much knowledge you can add.
At Milestone, additive content runs as a continuous cycle on a single platform.
Don’t just optimize the information you have. Expand what the world knows about you. Get found. Be understood. Be chosen by AI.
