Twitter Landscapes, Hot Topics and Trends

The first Twitter session at PubCon 2009 was a panel of Twitter experts talking about how Twitter is being used for business. They discussed a lot of new and exciting developments and advice for how businesses can use Twitter to monitor their online reputation and make money.

Warren Whitlock
One of the key themes of the Twitter and Social Media sessions at PubCon was the importance of listening to the people in your network and the people who are using social media to talk about your brand. Warren Whitlock stressed that you should listen more than you speak (or tweet). If you don’t read what other people are saying, you are missing a huge opportunity.
If you let your audience know that you are listening, you will easily build up followers, but you need to let them know that you care about what they are saying.

Dan Zarrella

The second presenter was Dan Zarrella from Hubspot. Dan presented some detailed statistics about which tweets get retweeted. Getting retweets can help you gain more followers, so it’s a good idea to keep these stats in mind.

  • 75% of retweets have a link in them. People take the time to retweet interesting links.
  • is the most commonly retweeted url shortener. Use the shortest URL shortener possible.
  • The top ten most retweeted words:
    • you
    • Twitter
    • please
    • retweet
    • post
    • blog
    • social
    • free
    • media
    • help
  • The top ten least retweeted words:
    • game
    • going
    • haha
    • lol
    • but
    • watching
    • work
    • home
    • night
    • bed

Although most people consider it to be annoying, asking to please retweet something, does seem to work, based on the data above. The second list demonstrates that few conversational tweets get re-tweeted.

Chris Winfield

The third presenter was Chris Winfield of 10e20, who talked about Twitter as a communication tool. You can use Twitter for answering questions. For example:

  • If you are writing an article or blog post, you can use Twitter to get ideas
  • Find out more about your followers
  • Connect with the people you need to reach, like reporters for PR

Some tips for asking questions:

  • Add some mystery to your tweets
  • Ask qualified questions  that people can easily answer.
  • Respond to the questions.

You can also use Polldaddy to create Twitter polls to track responses.

Kate Morris

The final presenter was Kate Morris of Marketing Demons. Kate noted that a lot of the new changes with Twitter are targeted towards businesses. For example, Twitter recently added a lists feature, and a lot of the other social media sites are making it easy to tweet their content through “share this” or “tweet this” widgets.


Communication via social media basically amounts to “word of mouth” advertising, but
in the case of Social Media, companies actually have the ability to actively influence word of mouth.

Every company now is integrating social media into their marketing budgets. Companies should consider the following when getting involved in social media:

  • Brand development
  • Word of mouth influence
  • Specials
  • Coupons

There was a common theme heard throughout PubCon 2009 companies should get involved in Twitter. Your customers are out there talking about you and your industry, whether or not you are there to participate in the conversation.
