San Francisco Hotel Council Economic Forecast

The San Francisco Hotel Council recently held their annual Economic Forecast, sponsored by Expedia, at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. If you were not able to make the event, largely targeted to General Managers and Directors of Sales, we have highlighted the top trends affecting the San Francisco hotel market for you.

Expedia was the first presenter and gave a very concise interpretation of the anticipated international traveler increase and how through monitoring hotel inventory, and correlating booking windows with geographic booking patterns, hotels can maximize their exposure to potential international consumers.

CBRE Hotels discussed hotel supply and demand for the immediate future.  Their key points were:

  • With anticipated closure of Moscone Center for renovation, 2017 & 2018 will show decreased demand for hotel rooms.
  • Hotel construction in the greater Bay Area MSA remains stagnant with very few new build projects slated.


Nicole Halmer, Senior Director Marketing Strategy and Research, SF Travel Association, provided a complete breakdown of Moscone related room nights and non-Moscone related room nights.  One of Nicole’s key points was that even though pace looks behind (due to Moscone Center construction) self-contained business pace is higher than it has been in the past both for individual hotels and hotel clusters.

The expansion plans at the San Francisco International Airport were reviewed. SFO is mirroring the trend that Expedia mentioned noting increased inbound international travel. was the final presenter. The most notable trends mentioned were the consumer’s growing dependence on Mobile as a booking vehicle and social media’s influence on travel decision making.

The facts speak for themselves –decreased demand for 2017 & 2018 and changing traveler booking habits mean hoteliers need to make certain that their sales efforts and digital marketing are working together and performing as well as possible.
