Talking about Google Local at SES San Francisco

At SES today, we learned a few things to do and not do in order to rank locally on Google. The local primer lab helped consolidate Google Local issues that will be thoroughly discussed in tomorrow’s Local Lab session. Local search has grown tremendously.  82% of local searches are followed by offline call, in store visits or purchases. It is crucial to be present in the Google 7-pack and display accurate information.

Below are 7 factors that will influence ranking within the 1st page on Google maps:

  1. Having a Verified listing.
  2. Having accurate and correct information.
  3. Appropriate categories.
  4. Ensure website is linking to Google place page.
  5. Have web references that verify your line of business. These should support the category selections within your local listing.
  6. Physical Address and local phone number must be consistent to geography in which you are searching. NO 800 OR PHONE TRACKING NUMBERS.
  7. Ensure that you only have one Google Place page associated with your business and make sure information is complete and unique.

If you find that your business information is inconsistent across the web, your plan of attack should be to correct this information across all data providing sources. A great way to begin doing this would be to go to and navigate to their resources section. There you will find Local search eco system data flow chart. This will give you direction on how to begin “fixing” your online contact information for your business. ( Now you have the tools, go get the local traffic!
