Keyword Stuffing

The common question which reoccurs time after time is maximizing keyword usage. Meaning if keyword phrases and H1 tags are important for organic optimization, let’s stuff the entire page full of relevant keywords and create as many H1 and H2 tags as possible. This is a common misconception. People and search engines alike do not like over-stuffed keywords. Instead of helping your site rank better this can actually damage your site’s ranking and appeal. The most obvious sign of keyword stuffing is when you notice a decrease in your site’s performance, and at this point it is time to review your SEO strategy.

Some key areas to look for are: placing extra keywords into alt attributes where they do not belong, adding a laundry list of keywords in the keyword phrase tab, forcing all link partners to use the same exact anchor text, writing title tags loaded with a bunch of keywords, pasting keyword rich content in the footer of your page, and targeting each page for the same broad range of keywords.

The bottom line on ranking high depends on two things: (1) page factor and (2) off page factor. When we consider writing content, we should focus on a bucket of keywords focused on a similar interest. Use these keywords logically in the title, description, body copy and H1, H2 and H3 tags. Successfully cleaning up your site can significantly increase performance.
